New York Crime Rate — March 2025

Brooklyn CD2 — Brooklyn Heights / Fort Greene aggravated assault ran 64% above its multi-year baseline.

Aggravated assault in Brooklyn CD2 — Brooklyn Heights / Fort Greene is the dominant signal this month, the strongest single-neighborhood movement in the March 2025 briefing. The category also surfaced in Queens CD3 — Jackson Heights / East Elmhurst, making aggravated assault the category that appears most prominently across the top rankings. There is no recurring lead from prior months to displace — this combination is new to the top position.

Citywide volume in New York is down 3.4% against the prior 12 months — 277,228 incidents against 286,838 in the year before. The signal mix leans toward spikes: 30 spike signals against 26 below-trend signals, with 52 sustained-shift signals providing the broader backdrop. Sexual assault registered fresh signals in two neighborhoods — Queens CD13 — Queens Village / Cambria Heights and Brooklyn CD14 — Flatbush / Midwood — both appearing in the top five, a category pattern worth tracking. Fifty-nine neighborhoods produced at least one signal across 109 total.

The citywide decline holds, but the spike-heavy mix this month — 30 upward signals against 26 downward — is a different shape than a month dominated by sustained drops. The aggravated assault cluster across Brooklyn CD2 and Queens CD3, combined with the dual sexual assault signals, gives March 2025 a more active upper tier than a routine check-in month. Whether these signals cluster into a sustained pattern is what April's data will show.
